Towards an Internet of Battlefield Things

Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, and Reconnaissance (ISTAR)
The talk covers research directions of the Internet of Battlefield Things Collaborative Research Alliance (IoBT CRA). The IoBT CRA is a roughly $40M, 10-year basic research project funded by the US Army Research Labs, that aims to advance the scientific foundations of performant and resilient intelligent computational and sensing services, tailored for the future tactical network edge. It is motivated by the rise of machine intelligence capabilities that promise to transform defense applications, shorten sensor-to-effect chains, and accelerate decision tempo to machine speeds. It also introduces significant performance and resilience challenges. The modern tactical edge will increasingly utilize myriads of multimodal intelligent sensors and heterogeneous computing resources, deeply embedded into an adversarial environment, networked together to increase flexibility, enhance real-time decision making, shorten kill chains, trigger effects, and improve insight into enemy actions. The IoBT CRA develops the foundations of efficiency and resilience of sensor-to-effect loops in the new intelligent networked computational and sensing substrate of the future tactical edge.
