The Right Honourable Alec SHELBROOKE

Chairman of the Defense and Security Committee, NATO

The Right Honourable Alec Shelbrooke MP has served as Leader of the United Kingdom Delegation to the NATO PA since 2020 and currently serves as Chairman of the Assembly’s Defence and Security Committee. He is a full member of the Defence and Security Committee, Georgia NATO Interparliamentary Council and Standing Committee and an alternate member of the Economics and Security Committee and Mediterranean and Middle East Special Group.  

Mr. Shelbrooke attended St George’s Church of England Comprehensive School in Gravesend, before going on to study Mechanical Engineering at Brunel University. He is a Mechanical Engineer by profession and had a successful career outside of politics before he was elected to the UK Parliament in 2010. Latterly, he worked on international research projects with the University of Leeds. 

Mr. Shelbrooke was elected the Conservative MP for Elmet & Rothwell in 2010. He served as Parliamentary Private Secretary in the Department for Transport, the Department for Work & Pensions, the Northern Ireland Office, and the Foreign & Commonwealth Office between 2010 and 2015, before joining the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. He was Minister of State for the Ministry of Defence between 6 September 2022 and 26 October 2022. 

Mr. Shelbrooke was Vice-Chairman (International) of the Conservative Party between 2017 and 2020, a role which involved building relationships with political parties internationally to enhance democratic institutions in the developing world.
